Ask anyone who has tried to lose weight and they’ll tell you the same.
Actually you can ask me: I’ve done both.
As someone who has been an entrepreneur for the past 12 years and also recently dropped 21 pounds, I think there are actually a lot of similarities between the two endeavours. In fact, many of the skills I’ve developed while running my business have been instrumental in achieving my personal health and wellness goals.
Here are three things I learned as an entrepreneur that helped me lose weight:
1. Plan Ahead
Any good advisor will tell you the first key to running a successful business is having a plan. It’s a tool to help you outline your objectives and then map out the path you need to take to achieve them.
The same is true with weight loss. Creating and sticking to a plan (i.e. a diet and exercise routine in this case) will help you stay on track and start shedding those pounds. You don’t even need to start from scratch necessarily; for me, sticking to an established and trusted diet program like Ideal Protein was exactly what I needed to achieve my weight loss goals.
2. Be Patient with Yourself.
Just as you wouldn’t expect to become a millionaire in your first month of business, you can’t expect to reach your weight goal after only a few weeks. It took me four months to lose those first 21 pounds. There were times I didn’t think I was getting any closer to achieving my goals (both in my diet and in my business), but I stuck with it and eventually I started to see progress. Good things take time.
3. Always Persevere.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned as an entrepreneur it’s to expect the unexpected. There will always be challenges and setbacks on your journey. Is that a reason to throw in the towel and give up? No way. Learn to roll with the punches, be creative with your solutions, and keep on moving forward. Hard work pays off.
Even if you’ve never run your own business you can still use these lessons to help you achieve your own health and wellness goals.
