Many people are only aware of one of their brains, but scientists have established that humans actually have three brains: the head, the heart, and the gut.

The first, what we’re usually referring to when we talk about the brain, is the one in our heads – master of psychological processes like thinking and perception.

Next is the the heart – the little, or moral, brain. This is where we process emotions, it’s why we say things like “follow your heart.”

Finally, we have the gut brain, where the majority of neurotransmitters are created. It helps keep us safe. The gut is both responsible for immune health and where our instincts lie. Consider the phrase “go with your gut.”

These three parts of the body have their own nervous systems and can process information to adapt – that’s how they become categorized as brains.

“It’s only by honouring these three brains of the body that we can overcome mental health challenges and achieve optimal health,” explains Dr. Khosroshahi, ND at Align.

Here are some of the ways you can improve your brain health:

1) Drink more water. Your brains need water – it’s essential for optimal cellular functions. Dehydration focus causes mineral imbalances in your cells that decreases their efficiency and reduces neuron function. This can alter your mood and impair memory and focus. Don’t just drink when you’re thirsty – sip water throughout the day so you can pay attention to all the messages your brains are sending you.

2) Meditate. Meditation and deep breathing has a positive affect on the autonomic nervous system, changing your heart rate and brain waves. In his 12-session program Pick Up Sticks, Dr. K connects patients to a computer to show how meditative breathing exercises can get them in the zone. Start with taking a few deep breaths right now – you’ll see how much it improves your mood and focus.

3) Eat more fibre. It’s boring, but it’s true. Fibre helps to regulate digestion, stabilize blood sugar, and keep your gut healthy by moving digested food through the body. The longer food stays in your gut, the more time your body has to re-absorb the things it was trying to get rid of in the first place. Eat your veggies!

4) Get enough healthy fats. The human brain is composed of about 60% fat, so it needs those nutrients to work efficiently. Essential Fatty Acids – essential because our bodies cannot produce them – are necessary to include in our diets. Consume fats like coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, and clarified butter (ghee) from high-quality sources to keep your brain healthy.
