While we’re often led to believe that brain health naturally declines as we age, Align’s Dr. Cindy Heavener has spent much of her 30-year-career as a chiropractor helping patients understand that it doesn’t have to be this way.
You may not have considered it before, but spine health is directly linked to brain health. Together your brain and spine combine to form the nervous system, which regulates all body functions and, in turn, all aspects of your health.
“Biomechanical problems and subluxations in the spine can translate into abhorrent signals sent through the nervous system to the brain,” Dr. Heavener says. “Your posture, how you move, and the health of your spine is actually really integral to brain health.”
Research by Dr. Roger Sperry, a neurobiologist and Nobel Prize winner, found that as much as 90 per cent of the stimulation and nutrition the brain needs to function is generated by movement of the spine. With this in mind, it becomes clear how how misalignments in the spine can have a negative impact on your brain and overall wellness.
For example, bad posture caused by constantly looking down at your phone (a.k.a. text neck) or being hunched over a computer at your desk all day can impede lung capacity. This in turn will decrease the amount of oxygen flowing to your brain and impair its function and health over time.
A healthy brain starts with a healthy back.
By maintaining your strength, mobility and proper posture through regular chiropractic care and adjustments, Dr. Heavener and the rest of the Align team is here to help you achieve better brain and body health through all stages of life.
