Healthy aging is a popular topic – and for good reason. When we think about our health as we get older, we often worry about things like weight gain, sex drive, or chronic diseases. But there are many other challenges that come with aging, such as hormonal changes, leaky gut, or variations to sleep and mood.

Dr. Urszula May, naturopathic doctor at Align Health Centre here in Newmarket, says it’s common for patients in their late 40s, 50s and 60s to feel run down, or express concerns about their overall health.

Some might call it a design flaw, but it’s entirely natural for the human body to lose some of its efficiency with age! Below Dr. May discusses some of the most common ways in which age affects our overall health:

  1.  Hormonal Changes

Hormonal changes are one of the most common complaints for both men and women when it comes to aging. For women, these changes may be more pronounced thanks to menopause and common side effects, such as hot flashes. But men also experience hormonal changes in the forms of decreased sex drive, or loss of muscle tone.

  1. Allergies

It’s not uncommon for allergies to intensify as we get older—and some of that is related to how our digestion changes with age. According to Dr. May, the older we get the less hydrochloric acid we produce in our stomachs, making it harder to break down proteins and causing inflammation in our guts. This can lead to something commonly known as “leaky gut” syndrome, allowing bacteria to “leak” through the intestines and into the blood stream, often causing underlying allergies to become aggravated.

  1. Sleep and Mood Changes

According to Dr. May, one of the most common complaints she hears about aging is changes to people’s sleep patterns and mood swings.  But what most people don’t realize is how much our diets can affect our mental abilities! Dr. May often recommends her patients try a spring detox, which helps the liver—our main source of detoxification—to wake up and reboot our systems.
