And seeing as it is Heart Health Month, I’m challenging all practice members (and everyone reading this blog post) to make at least one healthy lifestyle change this February for the sake of our collective heart health and wellness.
Heart disease is still one of the leading causes of death in our country, claiming one life every seven minutes according to the Heart Research Institute in Toronto. That’s over 33,000 Canadians dying a premature death each year.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Heart disease is preventable and many of its most common risk factors – high blood pressure, smoking, excessive alcohol use, and being overweight – are within your power to control. Simple things like eating better, being more active, or finding ways to reduce stress in your life can significantly lower your risk of developing a dangerous cardiovascular condition or having a stroke.
Living a healthy lifestyle is your best defence against heart disease.

Arrhythmia causes abnormal heart rhythm, and a diagnosis could mean your heart is beating too slowly (less than 60 beats per minute), or too quickly (more than 100 beats per minute).
