Tips on How to Take a Wellness Based Approach from Your Massage Therapists in Newmarket
It’s no surprise it’s flu season! We’ve been hearing about it for months now. All the hype has created two groups of people. The first are so scared they don’t want to leave their home until next summer and the second, people who believe that the media have blown the whole Flu Pandemic way out of proportion. I am here to say that we should all be somewhere in the middle. Influenza is serious but it is nothing to stop you from getting out and enjoying yourself. With this in mind let’s talk about the steps we can all take to keep ourselves and our community healthy this winter.
Step one: Keep those bugs off – WASH YOUR HANDS!!!
It sounds so simple doesn’t it? That is because it is. Washing your hands regularly and thoroughly, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds with soap and hot water, is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep those bugs off.
Step two: Get to know your immune system
Your immune system is your best defense against influenza. There are two parts to your immune system – the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system. The innate immune system is the first set of barriers that bugs need to get by before they are able to make you sick. One part of this innate immune system is your mucous membranes, like the skin in your nose. The key is that in order to do their job they need to be moist. Using a humidifier over the dry winter months is a great way to help. Also, remember to keep hydrated from the inside by drinking a minimum of two litres of water per day.
Step three: Eat well to stay well
Food = fuel = energy! Your body and your immune system need energy to stay healthy and work optimally. By eating a balanced diet including complete protein, essential fatty acids, complex carbohydrates and plenty of fruits and vegetables you are providing your body and your immune system with the right building blocks to keep itself well. Be sure to avoid include refined sugars which actually work against your immune system in its fight to stay healthy.
Step four: Take some time to relax!
Stress is inevitable but it is important to find ways to manage stress before it gets the best of you. Set aside a few minutes each day for yourself, exercise, call a friend and be sure to get a good night’s rest.
