“Good nutrition means you’re getting the right amounts of these macronutrients for your body type, activity level, and wellness goals,” says Align’s Dr. Alli Cain. “Too many people are paying attention to the details of nutrition and not focusing on the foundations first.”

The best source of these macronutrients are natural foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean meats. Foods that are overly processed and packed with sugar or other harmful ingredients don’t provide the body with enough of what it needs to perform optimally, which in turn contributes to poor health outcomes.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to completely give up all the foods you love… even if those include pizza and chocolate cake.

Dr. Cain says good nutrition is about understanding the contents of your food and making smart food choices. Eating the occasional slice of pizza or cake doesn’t mean you’re unhealthy or need to feel guilty.

It’s about making sure your diet is balanced and supplies your body with the proper fuel it needs.
