How many times have you found yourself sitting at your desk hunched over a keyboard and staring at your computer screen, only to realize it’s been hours since you last got up for a break?
If you’re an office worker, chances are it happens fairly frequently.
Over time, these prolonged periods of time spent sitting and the poor posture that tends to go along with it can put strain on the spine and result in all sorts of detrimental health effects. In fact, many researchers are saying sitting is becoming the new smoking.
There’s not a week that goes by at Align Health Centre without at least one new practice member seeking treatment for lower back pain, neck aches, stiff shoulders and wrists, headaches or some other misalignment that can be linked back to their sedentary office lifestyle.
It’s not just older patients either. These issues affect both men and women and everybody from office interns right up to CEOs.
The good news is there are lots of things you can do to help combat the negative effects of working eight (or more) hours a day in a cubicle each week.
Take Quick Breaks (And Take Them Often)
For starters, try and get up from your desk for a few minutes every hour to give your body a quick break. Use this time to move around and stretch your neck, back, and legs to relieve tension (and stress)!
Invest in the Right Equipment
It’s also important to think ergonomically at work. Get yourself a comfortable chair that fits your body and adjust it so you can sit with your back straight and feet flat on the floor. Position your monitor at eye level and raise your mobile devices up in front of your face when using them to avoid putting stress on your neck. Move your whole arm when you use your computer mouse and keep your keyboard at elbow level to avoid straining your wrists.
See Your Chiropractor Regularly
Of course, regular visits to your chiropractor can help ease and eliminate the health issues mentioned above and improve your overall wellbeing too. When your body is aligned and functioning well, you should feel healthy and free from pain.
We understand you’re a busy professional with a demanding work and life schedule, but chiropractic doesn’t have to be a big time commitment. After your initial consultation, a routine visit and adjustment can take as little as 10 minutes.
